STRESS & ITS TYPES
STRESS & ITS TYPES
Stress:
It is an internal resistance force induced in a material against the
external force, this force per unit area is called stress.
*SI unit of stress is N-M² and N-mm²
*It is donated by f and S
*Its symbol is Ϭ
*Formula of Stress is f=F/A
Types of Stress:
There are three types of Stress.
1. Compressive
Stress.
2. Tensile
Stress.
3. Shear
Stress.
1: Compressive Stress:
·
When a body is subjected to
two equal and opposite axial pushes P (also called compressive load), then the
stress induced at any section of the body is known as Compressive Stress.
·
Compressive load, there will
be an increase in cross-sectional area and a decrease in length of the body.
The ratio of the decrease in length to the original length is known as
Compressive Stress.
2: Tensile Stress:
·
When a body is subjected to
two equal and opposite axial pulls P (also called tensile stress), then the
stress induced at any section of the body in known as Tensile Stress.
·
Tensile load, there will be
a decrease in cross-sectional area and an increase in length of the body. The
ratio of increase in length to the original length is known as Tensile Stress.
3: Shear Stress:
·
Force parallel to the
resisting the force cause shearing stress. It is different to Tensile &
Compressive stresses, which are caused by forces perpendicular to the are on
which they act. Shearing stress is also known as tangential stress.
